Online gaming stimulates the Aging Mind

seniors-cardsDid you know that playing free online games can help prevent the onset of mild mental disease and dementia in individuals from age 55 to 75 year? While online gaming is relatively a new phenomenon, it has been found to provide a lot of cognitive benefits to the young and the aging. In children, video games are known to promote skills related to decision-making, memory, attention, and perception. It turns out that people between 55 and 75 years of age can benefit from playing video games to a great extent. At least these are the findings of a study done at Montreal University in Canada. In two studies done earlier in 2014 and 2017 among 20 to 29-year-old adults, it was proven that playing 30 video games involving puzzles and logic increased the brain's gray matter in the hippocampus.

The brain's hippocampus, the region concerned with episodic and spatial memory, is key to good cognitive health in the long-term. It is the gray matter in this region that determines whether an individual will suffer mild cognitive disorders as well as Alzheimer's disease. Due to the positive results in the preceding research studies, it was decided that a similar study is done among individuals between 55 and 75 years of age. The researchers selected 33 individuals in this age group and divided them into three separate groups. Group one played Super Mario 64 (a 30 game), group two took piano lessons, while the last did not participate in any activity. All of these activities were to take place for half an hour a day for five week days.

poker-seniorOver a span of 6 months, the researchers followed up on the participants on how they were using the game consoles and pianos provided to them. To know whether the experiment was a success or not, the effects of the experiment at the beginning and end of the research were observed. The researchers used two measurements, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cognitive performance tests. MRI was mainly used to measure any changes in the volume of grey matter.

Apart from measuring brain activity, the test was meant to look for changes in the prefrontal cortex, a region of the brain that controls inhibition, decision-making, and planning. Also studied was the cerebellum which plays a key role in balance and motor control. The hippocampus was also observed.

The results were astonishing. It was only the group that played video games in whom an increase in cerebellum and hypothalamus gray matter was observed. There was also a marked improvement in the subjects' short-term memory. Surprisingly, the passive group experienced some forms of brain atrophy. It is clear that playing online games has the effect of activating the function of the hippocampus, which can potentially prevent mental degeneration in individuals between 55 and 75 years of age. According to a new research that was performed by,  people are most happy to play for real money at an online Canadian casino. While keeping their spending under control, the winnings are high and most rewarding.
